Breast cancer biobanking and research
July 4, 2019
Dr. Yayuan (Joshua) Zhao, a Tissue Research Scientist and Pathologists’ Assistant in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, recently presented his research work “Effect of breast surgery types on tissue procurement for biobanking and research” at the Canadian Association of Pathologists Annual Meeting held in Niagara Falls, ON, June 22-25, 2019.
Dr. Zhao, working in collaboration with Dr. Sam Aparicio (BC Cancer Research Centre) and breast surgeons at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital, has demonstrated that tissue procurement for research, from consented patients undergoing breast cancer surgery, is most successfully accomplished from mastectomy specimens compared to smaller breast-conserving lumpectomy specimens.
